You can factory reset your Windows 7 password even without any disk or a Microsoft account. Follow the steps given below to reset your password through the hard way:

  • First of all, turn on your system and wait until the Windows logo appears on your screen. Then, unplug the power cord or press the power button to force shut down your PC. When you turn it on again, you will be asked to choose one among the two options: Launch Startup Repair and Start Windows Normally.
  • Click on the Startup Repair option to fix your problems. There might be chances that the Windows 7 repair process fails after a while. In such a case, Windows 7 will ask you if you want to send information to Microsoft. Ignore it and click on the Hide problem details button located right below it.
  • Scroll down till the end of the text box, and click on the link indicating, “X:\Windows\System32\en-US\erofflps.txt”.
  • This will open Notepad on your screen and will provide you access to your hard disk. All you have to do is go through the following steps after opening Notepad, you can also work within your computer’s file system.
  • Click on the File button from top-ribbon and then select Open. Now you must have access to the C:\ drive, which might be named as Local Disk (C:\) or Windows 7 (C:\).
  • In the Files of type option located at the bottom, click on the “Select All files” option. Then go to Windows, System32, and scroll down until the sethc file appears on the screen. Then, right-click on the sethc file and select Rename from the context menu. Then, rename the file to any other name, for example, sethc password.
  • Next, search for a file called cmd in the System32 directory. Right-click on it and select Copy from the context menu. Then, click in the empty space on the window and select paste to copy that file.
  • Rename the copy folder of cmd as the sethc, i.e., it should be the exact same name of the file that you have renamed above.
  • Close all windows and when you reach the Startup repair window, click on Finish.
  • Then, restart your computer as this brings you back to the Windows 7 login screen. Keep pressing the SHIFT key for about five-six times.
  • This will open the cmd screen and here you need to enter the following command: Net user. Then, press Enter key and this will display a list of usernames that are available, including your own. Click on the one that you want to log into.
  • Next, enter the following command: Net user YOURNAME *. The system will then ask you to confirm a new password. Press ENTER key twice if you don’t need to enter any password.

After executing the above steps, close the window and log in with an empty password by just clicking on the arrow button.

Hope, the above-mentioned steps will help you to reset Windows 7 password. But, if none of the above methods work, then all you are left with is to wipe your entire disk and reinstall Windows. In such a case, you can reset your PC.
